Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; BFA and Master’s degree preferred
  • Prior teaching experience (elementary, art)
  • Knowledge of child development and how it applies to an elementary art curriculum
  • Passion for working with children and the ability to be patient, understanding and flexible
  • High ethical professional standards and ability to work collaboratively with other teachers

Position Description:

Walden, a progressive Pre-K through 6th grade private school, is seeking applicants for a temporary, one-year art specialty teaching position. Walden School’s art program is a TAB choice-based art program that gives students autonomy in their art making and the ability to develop their own ideas and projects within a center-based frame work. As the sole art specialty teacher applicants must be self-motivated, organized, passionate about art and supportive of Walden’s progressive educational mission.

This position is paid hourly (M-F, 35-40 hrs/wk) and requires a full-time commitment of one school year (September- June). Ideal applicants are looking for a professional growth experience and the opportunity to gain experience using the TAB approach to art education through mentorship by Walden’s current art teacher.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create mini-lessons and age-appropriate projects for Kindergarten through 6th grade students following a TAB consistent approach
  • Teach 10 classes per week, M-F
  • Introduce students to art history, techniques and art concepts
  • Lead critical discussions and structured share time
  • Teach creative thinking and problem solving
  • Manage studio work time
  • Set and clearly communicate class room expectations
  • Keep track of student art work
  • Order supplies and maintain media specific centers: painting, ceramics, drawing, collage, fiber arts and sculptural construction
  • Load and fire electric kiln
  • Write narrative student evaluations twice yearly
  • Display student work throughout the year and curate an all school art exhibition during open house
  • Communicate effectively with children, parents and administration
