Glendale Arts and Culture Commission
The City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission has designed a program to support public art programs and to enhance the community and neighborhoods through the use of murals. The project, Beyond the Box, would enhance the aesthetics of the city, promote civic pride, increase pedestrian traffic and extend public art to new areas and unexpected places while creating an attractive environment and allowing art to be introduced to the public in a creative and inventive way. The program goal is to bring beauty to unexpected places such as public infrastructure and utility boxes.
This Call For Submissions is for a Beyond The Box utility box mural event that will take place on May 14, 2016, with selected utility boxes located:
- In the Kenneth Village area near Kenneth Road
- On Canada Boulevard near Glendale College
The Glendale Arts & Culture Commission would like to encourage artists and community members to create murals in the City to beautify the streetscape. Artists are not required, but highly encouraged to incorporate volunteers into the mural process. Artists may create a template or outline to help volunteers paint the mural, or propose another concept for involving volunteers in the mural process.
Artists will be asked to prepare utility boxes (sand and prime) on Friday, May 13, 2016. Artists are required to paint the mural on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Artists will be asked to apply final protective coating on Sunday, May 15, 2016.
The application is due Monday, April 4, 2016.
