State Budget Woes Threaten School Districts

The LA Times Homeroom Blog reported that another $3 billion in cuts have been proposed to the Department of Education for FY 08-09

State Supt. of Pubic Instruction Jack O'Connell made the following statement in response to the cuts.
Arts for LA and the Arts for All Executive Committee are currently developing a strategy to address this issue at the state level.  

In the meantime, we recommend that parents, educators as well as students thank the Governor and state legislature for maintaining his commitment to arts education during these difficult economic times.

Senator Ridley-Thomas to Represent LA County's 2nd District

Ridley-Thomas

Mark Ridley-Thomas won 61.5% of the votes in the highly contested race for the 2nd district seat.  His opponent Councilman Bernard Parks received just 38.5% of the votes.  Arts for LA congratulates Supervisor-elect Ridley-Thomas and looks forward to working with his team to strengthen the arts and culture in LA County.

2008 Arts Leadership Convergence

On October 1st, Arts for LA gathered 200 arts, civic and education leaders at the Skirball Cultural Center to review a policy platform that will focus collective advocacy efforts over the next two budget cycles. M_Alexander

The platform, rooted in a value statement, contains eleven goals centered around seven areas: Arts Education, Funding, Revenue Streams, Cultural Infrastructure, Cultural Tourism, Integration with Every Aspect of Civic Life and Professional Development.

Arts for LA Welcomes Camille Schenkkan!

CamilleCamille started in September and has hit the ground running.  In addition to managing the day-to-day membership program, Camille is charged with implementing our online communication systems, including our Drupal website and monthly eblasts and reservation systems.  Additionally Camille will assist in Arts for LA’s day-to-day operations.
