Santa Monica Councilmember Kevin McKeown: Bergamot Station is Safe

At an event this afternoon I was fortuitously seated next to County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, and got to speak with him privately, one-on-one, for a few minutes. I asked him for his help with Santa Monica's concerns about the location of the planned Expo maintenance yard. While Zev didn't offer much hope that the yard would be anywhere outside of Santa Monica, he did state categorically that he does not, and will not, allow the use of Bergamot as a site. Period.

Re-Funding the Arts in California

Just a few weeks ago, we saw an important victory in the US Congress, where arts advocates were able to secure an additional $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the federal stimulus package.

Now, California Arts Advocates has sponsored a bill that seeks to restore full funding for the California Arts Council (CAC).  The Creative Industries Revitalization Act, or AB 700, would provide grants to nonprofit arts organizations by directing 20% of the sales tax collected on works of art and like items (things like paintings, sculpture, musical instruments, sheet music, etc.), to a special fund to be administered by the CAC.
