Report-Out: Emerging Arts Leaders LA's Creative Connections 2009

EAL/LA's Creative Conversations

EAL LA Creative Conversations
Emerging Arts Leaders Los Angeles presented Leveraging Networks, a daylong convening at Long Beach's Expo Building on October 17th, 2009.  The event was one of many happening nationally during Arts and Humanities Month through Emerging Arts Leaders' Creative Conversations.

Panel Discussion
Hosted by Arts Council for Long Beach, Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, The Creativity Network and The Connected Corridor/Leadership Long Beach, Leveraging Networks brought together over 50 self-defined "Emerging Arts Leaders" from across LA County.

The day started with a panel discussion hosted by LA Stage Alliance's Terence McFarland and featuring three pillars of the Long Beach creative sector: Kerstin Kansteiner, owner of Portfolio Coffeehouse, Sheinina Raj, visual artist and board member of Park[ing] Day LA, and Richard P. Townsend, President and CEO of the Museum of Latin American Art.

During lunch most participants took a tour of the Expo Building, which has been converted from an old furniture warehouse to a fantastic gallery space.  Photographer Dawid Jaworski captured beautiful images from the day, including shots of the art installations.  Several of the photos are featured in this blog.  To see more (and get involved with Emerging Arts Leaders/LA), please visit the EAL/LA Facebook page.

Nestation
For the afternoon session, we broke into three discussion groups to define action items for the Emerging Arts Leaders/LA network.  The breakout sessions-- Strategic Alliances, Marketing Yourself and Activating Alternative Spaces-- gave participants a chance to share information and get to know one another.  I participated in the Strategic Alliances breakout, which focused on cross-sector collaboration, effective networking and strengthening communication between and among diverse networks.

After coming back together at 2:15 to report on the main themes of each discussion group, we left the Expo Building after a networking whirlwind and a mass business card exchange.

Discussion group
Organizers provided all participants with the notes from the event, an Arts for LA info sheet on Advocacy 101 and a helpful professional development/job hunting article by Alexa Brandt.

Once again, Emerging Arts Leaders/LA provided a nurturing and professional environment for growth, conversation and networking.  To get involved with the group, go to our Ning social networking site at http://eal-la.ning.com and click on the links to join our active Google Groups listserv and Facebook group.
