Job Title: Curatorial Intern
Hours: 10 hours/week
Compensation: $10.50/hour

Dates of Internship: 17 consecutive weeks between January 23-May 23, 2017

Eligibility: 

Currently enrolled upper division undergraduate or graduate level College of the Arts students at California State University, Long Beach; or currently enrolled Long Beach City College students who demonstrate significant success in arts coursework and have completed at least 20 units in an arts related field. Students may participate in Creative Long Beach for a maximum of two semesters.

Position Description: 

The Curatorial Intern will be integral in assisting with exhibitions and maintaining an expansive visual arts archive.  Through our outreach programming, the intern will assist the exhibitions coordinator in all aspects of our exhibitions programs that feature the work of artists with disabilities.  Specifically, the intern will assist in curating art exhibitions, matting/framing and cataloging artwork.  The intern will also play a significant role in maintaining a 35-year archive of artwork of 100+ artists.  He/She will photograph, document, and archive the artwork in addition to assisting in writing artist bios and completing miscellaneous projects as they relate to the individual needs of the artists and outreach team at Able ARTS Work.

Interns are an integral part of our team and are invited to community events and internal professional development meetings and/or presentations. Interns are invited to contribute to our “process” blog to share a significant experience they have had with the artists we serve, our organization as a whole or an area of their internship that is of particular interest. Through these experiences, the Intern will gain a greater understanding of how the arts function to meet community needs through the lens of social justice and wellness.

Qualifications:  

  • An interest in art, exhibitions
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Photoshop
  • Familiarity with photography (a plus but not required)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively
