Position Seeking: City Council
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
As a young boy, my parents took me to see the 1964 New York World's Fair. On display was Michelangelo's Pieta. I didn't know much about art at the time. I didn't have a good idea just who Michelangelo was. I knew little or nothing about sculpture. However, standing in front of and viewing that magnificently beautiful and sculpture had a profound impact on my life. I went on to study quite a bit about Michelangelo, his amazing life and artistic genius. To this day, I remain in awe of all the incredible beauty and powerful inspiration created by that unique artist, Michelangelo.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
Among the world's greatest cities and cultures throughout recorded history and before, art has played an important role. Burbank may not be Paris or Rome, but the City Council should devote a portion of its focus and goals to incorporate new, and preserve our existing, art and cultural heritage. The City Council has in the past been asked to select from various Arts in Public Places proposals to ensure that sponsored works of art are reflective of Burbank's traditions and values. I think this is an appropriate role for the Council as well as encouraging and supporting educational and public art appreciation.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
Burbank should retain and enhance its high profile standing among cities within our state and nation. One way for Burbank to continue as this special place to live and visit is to continually enrich its appreciation of all the arts....Doing so encompasses not only traditional art forms, but also new forms of digital media arts, special effects, music and applications of new and creative technologies applied to artistic development.
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
For the past several years on the City Council, I have worked very hard to bring awareness and focus progress on the development of new workforce training and career technical education to Burbank. To overcome the inertia of introducing new and innovative training covering a full spectrum of occupations and skill sets, I collaborated with various community leaders, businesses and the Burbank Unified School District to jump start these efforts by focusing on digital media arts. Much progress has been made adopting this approach in a City that has such a rich pool of entertainment industry talent and energy. I look forward to advancing and expanding these initial efforts upon being re-elected.
