I am unfamiliar with the plan.
I dont feel there are any weaknesses or drawbacks. The core curriculum needs a meaningful sequential arts education program now. The strengths would be to raise the graduation rate & lower and eliminate the dropout rate which is absurdly high.

I believe the district should get more involved in the community and schools so that people can be informed about what the district is doing to improve. People should be encouraged to help with the plan in any way that they can rather than not being about informed about it at all.
when elected , I will be a strong advocate in presenting or reinforcing the arts program to the entire school district. I will also partner and suggest arts for LA to any current music programs already in place. I would collectively like to see a merger to promote the arts as i feel it is very necessary for student achievement and promote unity.

Art is an inspiring and intriguing field that is a necessity for for encouraging creativity and individuality in our schools. Art allows us to channel our inner creativity and emotions physically. It offers a sense, of power, self discovery and accomplishment that can be a strong foundation to a promising future. In my experience in the school district I have taken notice of the joy and enthusiasm students show when art is apart of a school's curiculum. With art being so appealing and interesting to young minds, I believe that it can reduce the dropout rates tremendously. Student often find themselves bored with pure academics and lose interest, but, with art as a part of the curriculum they will have something they enjoy to look forward to. I also believe students underachieve because they aren't confident in their abilities. If students are able be exposed to art, they will gain a sense of confidence in their abilities and strive to become better. Since art is almost based on pure creativity, they will not be graded as critically as they would with only academics. As a result, they will pursue art and take their skills to new heights that will prepare them for college and beyond. Art, in my opinion, can serve as a catalyst for a meaningful and succesful life.
Public record shows schools rich in arts programs show an increase in graduation of students. The arts have been shown to reduce drop out rates, therefore helping students to increase their learning capacity, therefore helping students to increase their learning capacity, this prepares students to graduate high school, and move on to junior college and more.

4. In light of the current budget crisis, the state is now allowing local school districts flexibility to redirect their allocation from the “art and music block grant” to fund other local priorities. How would you balance the need to invest in arts education with the other financial challenges facing your district?

I think the best course of action in this budget crisis would be to first analyze the available funds and create a detailed budget plan that allocates all excess money to the arts education programs so that they will remain intact. Art is a necessity in my opinion and after taking care of local issues, we should invest all extra funds into arts education. I am a big fan of sports and extracurricular activities, but I believe art should take precedence over these areas since art is universal and can have such a positive effect on one's life. Though the extracurricular activities are very important, they should not be placed above arts education. In order to answer this question in more detail, I would have to see the district's entire budget outline.
flexibility is the key word,it takes people like myself to embody other board members & musicians to keep music and arts programs budgeted properly. Our school district would prosper much in making the arts the priority and invest in arts education. this will enpower compton children to grow in the arts ,as in other districts.

Growing up, art was always a large factor in my life. My father, Curtis Carson was a very talented painter who was able to personify the canvas with a mere stroke of a brush. He had been painting his entire life and was an expert in both personal and professional art. He was often contracted to paint large business signs and murals in the city of Compton including a portrait of General Benajmin O. Davis displayed at Compton's Davis Middle School, the Atlantic Farms Market sign on Atlantic avenue and countless signs for churches and businesses in the city. As a child and even now I admire his work and as a result I learned how to draw and paint in order to follow in his footsteps. During my adolescence, I honed and refined my art by doing everything from portraits of friends to vivid landscapes Eventually I had become so skilled that I was often hired to paint homes and offices. Thanks to my art, I was able to network with many people who have helped me get to where I am today. I owe a lot to art not only because it was a pleasurable hobby, but also because it sowed a seed that grew me into the man that I am today.
I was introduced to the opera quite young, in combination with ethnic latin music , Mariachi, Salsa music including musicians such as tito puente, Celia Cruz, & Cachao. Dance was intrduced as Fred Astaire, Bo Jangles. latin dance included The CHA CHA , Merengue Mambo. How is this for cultural exchange. In the late 50s , I was introduced to miles dewey davis, Mr. John Coltrane by me being introduced to these art forms it has made me more meaningful.
