General Job Description

The Petersen Automotive Museum is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to explore and present the history of the automobile and its impact on American life. The Petersen is currently closed for renovation and will re-open in December 2015 with three floors of all new exhibits and all new public programs.

The Education Coordinator will assist the Director of Education with many aspects of running the museum’s education department. This person will create a variety of public programs for adults, children, and families, coordinating both with other museum staff and volunteers. This position will also take a lead role in developing in-gallery interpretation programs, focusing on building and training a volunteer group to work as Gallery Guides and to work in the Mechanical Institute Discovery Center, an interactive gallery on the 2nd floor of the museum designed specifically for young visitors..

The Education Coordinator will provide administrative assistance for the Education Department. In addition, as part of re-opening efforts of the museum the Education Coordinator may be included in the development of public tours and docent training as necessary.

The position is full time, exempt, and reports to the Director of Education. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, and 401k. Start date is October 1, 2015.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned as appropriate)

Gallery Interpretation

  • Develop and launch a Gallery Guide program in which volunteers are trained to great visitors, provide information about the museum, help with wayfinding, be watchful over the collection, and provide a limited amount of information about the exhibits.
  • Create a Gallery Guide training program working with relevant museum staff, and evaluate performance. Create and fill shifts.
  • Develop and launch a volunteer program that provides staffing of the Mechanical Institute Discovery Center. The volunteers that work in this area may work in collaboration with part-time paid staff and will help children engage with the hands-on exhibits and activities to learn about the systems that work together in a car.
  • Create a Discover Center training program working with relevant museum staff, and evaluate performance. Create and fill shifts. Weekend shifts will be especially important.

Public Programs

  • Design a variety programs for the adults, children, and families with the goal of encouraging interest in automotive history, industry, and design, collaborating with other museum departments when necessary.
  • Programs may require the Education Coordinator to act as lead instructor, to find experts/specialists/artists to lead programs, or to train volunteers to facilitate programs.
  • Programs may require the formation of outside partnerships.
  • Develop program budgets, related literature and publications, promotion and marketing materials, and internal work orders and reports.

Administrative Duties

  • Manage program data and tracking statistics.
  • Manage email marketing lists and send email blasts to promote programs.
  • Update web content and social media, working with the Museum’s Digital Content Manager
  • Respond to emails and phone inquiries.
  • Prepare materials or supplies related to programs or trainings.

Education, Experience and Requires Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, History, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Three to five years’ experience developing educational programs for a variety of learning levels and ages in a museum or nonprofit setting.
  • Experience working with and coordinating volunteers.
  • Experience with youth programming or classroom teaching a plus.
  • Design or arts and craft skills a plus.
  • This position requires a highly motivated, creative, and outgoing person who enjoys working with the public and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and ability to learn quickly and multi-task in a deadline driven environment.
  • Applicant must be able to work varied hours on occasion, including evenings or weekends.
