A Place Called Home is seeking a General Music Instructor

Reports to: Conductor of Music Programs
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Hours: Part-Time (20 hours per week)           
Salary:   $13.00 -$15.00 per hour

A Place Called Home is a dynamic, non-profit youth center in South Central Los Angeles.  APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance and art classes, and fitness opportunities.  As youth participate in our programs, they discover interests and talents and develop a better sense of themselves and their place in the world around them.  Our goal is to increase the likelihood that youth will stay in school, pursue higher education, attain viable jobs, and become active citizens capable of making positive change in the world in which they live.  (www.apch.org)

 SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Conductor of Music Programs (CMP), the Music Instructor is responsible for providing general music education, theory and instrumental instruction both in classroom and individual setting, assisting members with performance preparation, and tracking member progress and attendance.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Music Instructor assumes the following responsibilities:

  • Provide general music education, theory and instrumental instruction in a group setting
  • Facilitate individual or small group instruction as needed
  • Conduct and track member assessments with the Berklee PULSE method (online learning resource with training provided)
  • Track member attendance and progress; prepare and submit reports
  • Assist department staff in preparing member assessments, correspondence and data entry
  • Chaperone members on department and agency field trips
  • Support staff in preparing music members for participation in special projects, performances and events (i.e. agency fundraisers, festivals, etc.)
  • Reach out to parents to encourage participation and attendance at orientations, recitals, performances and informal sessions
  • Collaborate with agency departments (i.e.  Dance, Digital Media, Art, etc.)
  • Agency-wide duties including youth supervision, inputting class attendance and participation in agency events as needed
  • Attend agency wide meetings, professional development activities, etc
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Valid CA driver’s license with clear DMV record (preferred but not required)                      

Basic level computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint); PC and Mac literate

Ability to speak, write and understand Spanish (preferred but not required)

Proactive and results oriented

Excellent knowledge of and experience in performing a variety of musical genres including Classical, Jazz, Rock, R&B necessary

Knowledge of one or more instruments including voice, piano/keyboards, guitar, bass and/or drums extremely helpful

Strong background in music theory, improvisation necessary

Classroom and project management

Group and Individual instruction

Ability to multi-task

 

Education/Training/Experience

  • Music Degree or proof of equivalent training in related field preferred 
  • 3-5 years providing classroom or group instruction to youth

 Physical and Mental Demands

  • Able to work in dynamic,  high noise level environment typical of a youth center
  • Walking, standing for several hours per day
  • Lift up to 30 pounds regularly
  • Speech and hearing within normal ranges; speech clarity sufficient for standard face to face and telephone communications
  • Use of hands for typing, data entry,  moving and loading sound equipment and musical instruments
  • Music Department classes are Monday through Saturday, some weekends and evenings activities, with some local travel as circumstances require

Additional Information

  • Must be willing to work Tuesday – Saturday schedule
  • Must be willing to be flexible and available for night and weekend performances
