Position: Harmony Project’s Regional Youth Orchestra Conductor

Description: The RYO Conductor is responsible for leading rehearsals of Beginner and Intermediate musicians in two Orchestras. 

Background: Harmony Project is Los Angeles’ largest 501(c3) nonprofit organization solely dedicated to education for low-income youth.  We have been recognized as on of the most effective arts youth development programs in the nation.

Hours: 3-5 hours per week with minimal administration hours

Essential Functions 

  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Lead rehearsals each Saturday morning of beginner and intermediate ensembles.
  • Prepare lesson plans and communicate with Teaching Artists (TAs) and Program Manager including weekly/monthly rehearsal schedules and rehearsal notes.
  • Create a seating audition plan in collaboration with Teaching Artists and Program Manager, including audition material and clear expectations for each ensemble.
  • Determine repertoire based on student abilities, program themes and teacher input.
  • Assist in maintaining strong relationships with program partners to keep our program relative to the community and involved in multiple community events.
  • Prepare orchestras for multiple concerts each year.
  • Attend TA meetings and visit group lessons on a regular basis to help connect orchestras to group lesson work. 

Reports to: Program Manager, Regional Youth Orchestra

Requirements

  • Proven conductor with experience working with youth orchestras at all levels
  • Strong understanding of youth orchestra repertoire, beginning instrumental curriculum and teaching artist pedagogy.
  • Flexible, creative and innovative in approach to curriculum, program and concert design.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with multiple constituent groups including general public, partner organizations, teaching artists, students and parents.
  • Ability to embrace, embody and reflect Harmony Project’s mission of investing in children and communities through music.
  • Experience in motivational mentor/role model for students, parents and teaching artists.
  • Ability to work under frequent observation.
  • Ability to arrange music and simplify orchestral parts
