Overview: 

The Interim Director of Education is responsible for managing the origination and organization of educational and outreach efforts compatible with the museum’s strategies and vision, and managing the operations of the Education department at the museum's three facilities (MOCA Grand Avenue, The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and MOCA Pacific Design Center).

Requirements:

  • Possession of a masters degree in Art History, Art Education, or a Ph.D in Education, with a minimum of seven to ten years related experience, which includes programs for all audiences,
  • with an emphasis on teen and adult programming; budget management and supervisory responsibility. Strong knowledge of contemporary art and educational theory; demonstrated leadership ability; and excellent written communication and public speaking skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct the operations of the Education department, which includes museum volunteer program; including the preparation and maintenance of operating and program budgets. 
  • In collaboration with the Curatorial staff, manage the planning and development of interpretative materials, thematic tours, teacher workshops, and other educational services to help adult and youth audiences better understand contemporary art.
  • Serve as a liaison between MOCA and institutions of higher learning, primary and secondary schools, and community organizations to cultivate new audiences to support the museum's educational program and services.
  • Participate, as a member of the Senior Staff, in the implementation of museum-wide initiatives regarding the interpretation of the permanent collection and travelling exhibitions.
  • Work closely with the Board of Trustee Education liaison and the Chief Curator to provide information to the Board regarding proposed and ongoing educational activities and programs.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
