youTHink, an innovative education program of the Zimmer Children’s Museum, uses the power of art to foster critical thinking, engage diverse learners, promote literacy and serve as a tool for social change. youTHink provides art/education lessons in Los Angeles area public schools along with meaningful art, leadership and community involvement opportunities for middle and high school youth beyond the classroom. youTHink seeks a Photography Teaching Artist to lead a 3-session photography program for middle and high school-aged youth in its leadership program. In “My Lens, My City,” youTHink Student Ambassadors will learn about photography (including elements of photography that they will use in their photos), develop their understanding of how it can be used to document and explore personal and community stories, and take photographs synthesizing this exploration. The focus of the project will be on the Ambassadors’ experience of their city, in all of its strengths, challenges, and complexities. Each Ambassador will exhibit a final photograph at a gallery on December 5 open to the public.

Program workshop dates:

Saturday, October 10 – 10am-3pm – Workshop 1 
Thursday, October 22 – 6 -7:30pm – Workshop 2
Thursday, November 5 – 6-7:30pm – Workshop 3 

The Photography Teaching Artist will be responsible for:

· Collaborating with youTHink staff to design the program, which includes:

o   Developing creative & participatory session plans to meet program goals & objectives

o   Prompts and assignments that generate content on the theme, and guide the young people towards a final image to print and exhibit

·Fully preparing for each session, including debrief with staff as necessary

·Leading the three-session program

·Completing a program reflection and submitting necessary documents on time


Qualifications:

·Minimum 3 years teaching artist experience with middle and high school students, including non-school settings

·Pedagogy that supports the youth in naming their own world and reflecting on their own experiences

·Minimum 3 years professional photography experience

·Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to a diverse group of youth from across Los Angeles

·The ability to collaborate with program staff to fold this photography project into the year-long  program goals
