City: La Verne
Position Seeking: City Council

Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.

I attended high school in London, England where I enjoyed arts and theater on a regular basis. This experience encouraged me to look at other cultures in a far more accepting manner and became the basis of my studies later in life. This has led me to seek out and to learn different viewpoints and opinions.

When we take the time to learn other cultures, it becomes far easier for us to understand their priorities and values. This, in turn, provides us with a better understanding of our own beliefs.

This concept has allowed me to make choices based on information and understanding. Furthermore, I have learned to reject motives that are based on fear and suspicion.

Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?

I believe that City Council has the obligation to seek educational and cultural alternatives for our community. Council Members should encourage the schools to develop and teach the arts, working in conjunction with the School Board to achieve this goal. Additionally, the City Council ought to communicate with regional organizations which specialize in fine arts (university, college, museum) for the purpose of encouraging these organizations to present and participate in the local community.

Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?

La Verne has a rich history of music and performing arts. I want to see La Verne continue and grow this tradition. Our community is surrounded by excellent performing arts centers and programs. We have the opportunity to further integrate these programs into our education system. Our newly constructed performing arts center is an excellent step toward this goal.

Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?

I believe that Los Angeles County and the City of La Verne are ideal locations for development based upon the creative arts. Here, we have the resources to support industries such as film-making, musical development and recording, graphic design, dance. As a La Verne City Council Member, I will insist that we contact these organizations and work with them in order to achieve an economic model that makes La Verne an attractive option for their growth.
