“Arts at the Core,” authored by Board of Education member Nury Martinez, underscored the broad value of an education that includes the arts and tasked the district with ensuring all its students had access to the arts throughout their time in LAUSD schools. As it places the arts among the other core disciplines like math and literacy, it also states any cuts to arts programs must be equal to cuts to other core subjects.

LAUSD Superintendent Dr. John Deasy called for swift action to implement the different elements of Arts at the Core. “In three years, we want to talk about what we’ve accomplished, not what we’re planning to do,” he told attendees.

Along with Ms. Martinez, Board of Education members Bennett Kayser and Steve Zimmer also made remarks, each of them sharing personal stories about the role of the arts in their own lives and childhoods and why they are so valuable for students today.
