Mayor Releases Statement in Support of DCA

Mon, 03/21/2011 - 8:40pm

Arts for LA has received the following statement from the Office of the Mayor and the Executive Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Dear Colleagues:

We have received many calls and e-mails today regarding the proposal by the City Administrative Officer (CAO) to eliminate the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). We want to be very clear:  the document titled, "Current and Future Opportunities to Strengthen City Government," recommending the elimination of DCA was authored by the CAO -- who is an independent entity -- not by the Mayor's Office. Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa understands the power and importance of the arts and opposes the elimination of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Sincerely yours,

Aileen Adams, Deputy Mayor, Office of Strategic Partnerships
Olga Garay, Executive Director, Department of Cultural Affairs

Having the unequivocal support of the Mayor is extremely important as we move into a extremely difficult budget process.  Arts for LA will continue to provide updates on this issue as it becomes available.
