An Information Alert from the Education Coalition:
RE: REPUBLICAN PROPOSAL CUTS BILLIONS FROM EDUCATION, GAMBLES WITH CALIFORNIA'S FUTURE, HURTS OUR SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS
Sacramento -- The Education Coalition announced opposition to theRepublican Senate budget proposal that permanently cuts billions fromour schools, and sets up yet another risky borrowing scheme that relieson temporary fixes and shortchanges our students by billions more infuture years.
THE REPUBLICAN PROPOSAL IS DEVASTATING TO CALIFORNIA'S STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS:
The Republican proposal cuts more than $5 billion from education andreplaces ongoing money with one-time dollars that would only create adeeper budget hole next year.
The Republican proposal gives the governor the power to cut localschool budgets in the middle of school year, making it extremelydifficult for schools to plan or function, meet the needs of studentsor attract and retain quality teachers and school employees.
The Republican plan to "securitize" the lottery irresponsibly takes abig gamble with our students future, cutting schools by $2 billion andputting at risk more than $1 billion in lottery funds that currentlysupport our schools, with only a hope that this scheme to borrowagainst the lottery can make up the difference.
The Republican proposal would put the Prop. 98 minimum school fundingguarantee at risk, instead relying on one-time temporary funding thatdoesn't address the long-term needs of our students.
The Republican plan will result in billions in more borrowing. ThePublic Policy Institute of California poll results show that only 8% ofCalifornia voters think that borrowing is the right approach to fixingour state budget crisis. Borrowing shortchanges our students, now andin the future.
That's why the Education Coalition strongly supports the originalconference committee budget, which addresses our budget shortfall witha balanced package of cuts and on-going revenues that prevents deepercuts to schools and students.
