Position Seeking: City Council

Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.

I recall three meaningful experiences. When I was in the fourth grade, The San Diego Symphony sponsored a called “the Children’s Symphony. Our teachers would take a group of students to classical music concerts at the Russ Auditorium. The orchestra would perform music from the great composers such Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Tchaikovsky. Next, in fifth grade, my teacher took four students from my class to folk music concert featuring the “New Christy Minstrels”. Later that year, I also saw an opera called “Pirates of Penzance”. The exposure to genres of music that at that time I didn’t know existed; helped to tuned my musical ear, shaped my mind by expanding my musical knowledge and helped me to develop an new appreciation of different forms of music.

Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?

The city council should take the leadership role by encouraging, creating the vision that support the regions art and cultural infrastructure. Every great city has a strong art and cultural infrastructure. Its important for the city council to encourage its development and create the vision for arts and culture. An arts and culture infrastructure a enhances a city’s vitality. A city should have a vision and a plan for arts and culture just it would for housing and the economy. A small city could create an arts and culture partnership with other cities to help support programs and activities that they couldn’t afford on their own. Research shows that art and cultural programs have a positive impact on the economy, enhances an appreciation cultural diversity and added entertainment value to a city..

Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?

My vision for the city of Gardena is stated clearly in our core values. It is a city of opportunity, a safe and attractive place to live, work and play, a community that values ethnic and cultural diversity and has a strong and diverse economic base. My vision for our city also includes building an arts and cultural center. It would have a space for a museum to house the pictures and artifacts surrounding the history of our city and its people. It would also have a stage with a state of the arts sound system for small concerts and plays. Our city has a unique heritage andI think it important to have a place to keep our historical records for future generations.

Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?

As I stated earlier, I believe my role as an elected official is to encourage the growth and development and continued vitality of arts and cultural programs, but not just the program but the artist the create the program. I also see my role as finding creative ways to fund programs, and finding creative work spaces and perhaps developing a create artist community within our city. I want to be that voice that reminds my colleagues that its art and cultural programs that make our city not only a great place to live and work, but also a great place to play.
