The Skirball Cultural Center seeks qualified candidates for the position of Preparator in the Skirball Museum. The Preparator performs a wide range of skilled duties in the preparation, installation, deinstallation, and ongoing care of artifacts and works of art in the Museum collections or on loan from other institutions. 

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing museum best practice methods, the Preparator is responsible for the safe handling installation, and deinstallation of art, objects, and related materials for exhibition. 
  • Receive and uncrate shipments of art and related exhibition materials.
  • Preparation and fabrication of temporary exhibition components such as display cases, mounts, frames, pedestals, and temporary walls as needed.
  • Installation of graphics, signage, labels, and lighting.
  • Work with outside contractors as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge and skills in the preparation, installation, and care/ handling of valuable objects in a museum or gallery setting
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds. Ability to work well in both a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to multi-task and complete projects in a timely manner
  • Demonstrated skill in fabrication and production techniques and in working with wood and machine shop tools
  • Knowledge of audio visual equipment a plus
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
