Position Seeking: City Council
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
As a 5th grade student, I played a very small part in the school play which I very much enjoyed. I played a little mouse. It allowed me to be creative and helped me become more confident about my self.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
As a city councilman and mayor, I have constantly sought to expand the “arts footprint” in Burbank. I meet regularly with the government-affairs people at Disney, Warner Bros. and other studios in order to ensure that these great studios will continue to produce films and other artistic projects. I work to make sure that as many local residents are hired and I am grateful for the enhanced revenue stream that films and other studio projects provide for the city.
I believe that the city should take the lead in attracting and developing the arts for our residents. We are the Media Capital of the world and we must continue to make Burbank a magnet for artists and their creativity and I will continue to make the effort to enhance the artistic life and atmosphere of our city.
I proudly supported the following art projects for our city: Public art sculptures at Lincoln Park and Utility Box Beautification Program- This program helps beautify our community, enhancing the lives of our residents as well as those who work in the city.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
No city or, for that matter, society, is complete without a commitment to and love of the arts; all the arts and all the people who create them. I am fully committed to continuing to make Burbank a world-class center for the arts. I work closely with the film studios and encourage their development, projects and expansion.
I want to make Burbank an open, welcoming city for new arts and expression. Our population is increasingly sophisticated and appreciative of the arts. I feel that city leadership must continue to nurture this atmosphere of creativity and expression. I take pride in Burbank’s attachment to the arts and I look forward to the projects and vision that will continue to make Burbank an arts Mecca.
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
I will continue my close cooperation with the studios in order to help ensure more jobs for Burbank residents. I will work to promote and expand the world-class Burbank Media Capital of the world.
I will continue to promote Burbank as an arts center, a place for exhibitions and shows by new artists. Perhaps “art zones” can be created within city limits, which would attract visitors and provide space and support for new and established artists. I will support whatever can be done practically and economically to promote and expand the “arts footprint” within Burbank. It is an important and very worthwhile effort.
