The Art of the Album
A Juried Design & Printing Competition
International Printing Museum
Celebrating the recent revival of vinyl records, the Printing Museum will mount a special exhibition at this year’s Los Angeles Printers Fair on Saturday, October 1st, THE MUSIC OF THE PRESSES: THE VINYL SLEEVES OF THE STOUGHTON PRINTING COMPANY. In conjunction with this exhibit, the Printing Museum also announces a special design and printing competition with $2,000 in cash awards for winning entries.
THE ART OF THE ALBUM DESIGN & PRINTING COMPETITION is a challenge for artists to design and PRINT by letterpress or screen a fictitious record album cover. Juried entries will be exhibited at the Printing Museum during this year’s Los Angeles Printers Fair. Winners will be announced the morning of the Printers Fair (need not be present to win) and will share cash awards totaling $2,000!
With the theme of THE MUSIC OF THE PRESSES, the fictitious band must be named after a historic pre-1975 typeface (though it is not required to use that font in the design).
Designers are encouraged to get creative using printing and typographic terms and themes throughout the design such as the name of the album, record company, concert location, etc.
Juried entries will be featured in a traveling exhibition to various book arts centers, libraries and museums around the country.
