With threats emerging of defunding the National Endowment for the Arts and its sister agency for the Humanities, Arts for LA executive director Sofia Klatzker travels to Washington DC for WESTAF's (Western States Arts Federation) annual Arts Leadership & Advocacy Seminar. During the January 30 through February 1 meeting, 60 arts advocates from Western states will learn more about the current and planned future work of the NEA, hear updates on federal-level advocacy efforts, and meet with their members of Congress.
Featured presenters include Laura Scanlan, Director of States & Regions, NEA; Sam Stein, Senior Politics Editor, Huffington Post; Nina Oulu Tunceli, Chief Counsel of Govt and Public Affairs, Americans for the Arts; Isaac Brown, Legislative Counsel, National Assembly of State Arts Agencies; Anthony Radich, Executive Director, WESTAF; and Dean Hingson, attorney and public legislative affairs consultant who previously held senior staff positions for ranking senate Republicans.
Sofia is scheduled to meet with members of Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday. Arts for LA will report back on these efforts in the February edition of Relay.
