City: Claremont
Position Seeking: City Council

Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.

As for me, I grew in a home where music was the center of every gathering. My parents both played in bands and came together weekly to rehearse. It was also a way to get all the families together especially being 1st generation in this country. Ever since my young years, my parents always taught me to perform and sing. I see the extension of music in every part of my life till this day. Music is emotional and speaks your heart. Unleashing your feelings through the vocal expressions and movements reach out to every thought you make into an action. So everything in my life has had to do with art well into adulthood.
In my teen years and early twenties, I Disc Jockeyed may event playing into the mood of the gathering. In my late twenties and early thirty’s, I saw the movement and momentum music played in society and realized the vital role it played in me.
One major part of music that has greatly affected me was worship music. When there were moments of heart break, sadness or frustration, when I put worship music on it soothes my soul and helps me to release anything negative. Music has and will always be a major influence on me.

Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?

Art has played an intricate part of my life. I must first admit, it has always been with me just as it is with every child from the start. Every child and adult is an artist at heart. Some more expressive than others. But unfortunately, we lose it mostly because of the lack of understanding in our upbringing or environments that we surround ourselves in. Art shapes everyone as it impacts us all.

Arts should be encouraged and funded just as much as math and science. The role of the City Council is to help create awareness and bring together ad hoc committees to help bring light to the influence of art in the community. Arts is a major factor in creating our culture therefor the City Council should drive the Arts and instill community programs more than ever.

Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?

The vision is to bring purpose, meaning, value, and culture to the city while balancing the budget. Arts and culture are a part of the Claremont Heritage and are a vital role to our city. Art and culture are part of the infrastructure and network of our great community. Without, we would not be Claremont.

Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?

Claremont is known for its Art and Culture. At one point we had an abundance of Art and Culture events in the City of Claremont yearly. Sadly, due to budgeting, many programs were eliminated and there is a stigma of Claremont losing its Vibe and Spirit. We need to resurrect this vibe and pour into the community additional art programs and encourage the youth up to the elderly to participate.
