City: Cerritos
Position Seeking: City Council

Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.

As a child, I enjoyed singing, which I do to this date. Growing up, I sang and acted in musicals for school. Art stimulated my brain, drove my creativity, developed my confidence to publicly speak, enriched my relationship skills with others and taught me to manage my time better.

Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?

The city council should work to establish an Arts council for Cerritos. The Arts council would focus on providing various services including: sponsoring arts festivals, showcasing the work of local artists, hosting art exhibits, concerts and performances, sponsoring arts workshops in community settings, or facilitating professional development services to existing arts organizations.

Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?

Successful cities don’t happen by accident. They need long term strategic planning coordinated action and sustainable investment My vision is 3-fold Healthy Connected City Thriving Educated Youth and Economic Prosperity and Affordability Healthy Connected City Neighborhoods that make healthy options affordable attractive and convenient make it much easier to live a healthy lifestyle People who live in neighborhoods with nearby shops and services safe pedestrian and bicycle paths and transit access can make walking and biking a part of their daily lives which is not the case today in Cerritos This type of city can also help reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and save residents money on transportation Thriving Educated Youth The most common age of Cerritos residents is 50 and we need to continue to make Cerritos a desirable place for young families to establish roots The already strong school district along with our central location between LA and Orange County makes Cerritos poised to host programs to encourage and advance youth such as robotics competitions STEM days or Spelling Bees Arts and Culture is the other side of the same coin Welcoming non-profit arts groups are a powerful economic force and acts as a magnet for tourism Economic Prosperity and Affordability I touched upon this in the previous forum but I firmly believe that we need to turn Cerritos into a Smart city A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate multiple information & communication technologies in a secure way to manage Cerritos's assets.

Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?

I will work with the Chamber of Commerce to determine how we attract art businesses. Furthermore, I would work with the city to ensure the rules and regulations make it easier to attract the artistic community. I would seek out non-profit arts agencies to better educate myself on working with the artistic community. I would also reach out to residents and request ideas to ensure we have the community support to bring the arts to Cerritos and have their support.
