City: Los Angeles
Position Seeking: City Council – District 7
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
Touring major galleries including the Louve in Paris, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, , La Prado in Madrid as a councilman in my 20s being part of the Art Establishment as a municipal funder of what San Diego sought to achieve. I knew Dr. Suess and Frank Zappa during my youth and their genius impressed me.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
Los Angeles should be among the leaders of our top ten cities in what it does for
arts, seeing that all youth have field trips, meet artists, have varieties of studies.
Council Members should provide their presence to annual meetings, fairs; and as a body honor those with achievements.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
We have a unique problem because in the County are greater pools of wealth than we have product available to invest in; we should encourage our aging
establishment to include the arts in their estate planning and make naming-projects available for the major benefactors, not just art projects but municipal
facilities of all natures. Eli Broad is a good example of what is needed.
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
Given the wealth of hispanic talent in our county, our education programs and
exhibits in public and private places should reflect the community. Replicas of
modern and historic masters should be available for home and gifting, similar to what we see the the National Gallery(Washington, DC), and leading citizens of every nation should be exposed to just what the Trump Administration has to
expose to the world.
