City: La Verne
Position Seeking: City Council
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
When I was in college, I took a color and composition class, and I had told the professor that I was not an artist. While looking at an early exercise in class, he asked me if I was sure that I wasn’t an artist. I told him that I wasn’t, but that my mom and my brother were artists. His reply was that I had artistic ability, but that I had not practiced my art. I think this is true for many people.
Knowing this about myself made me realize that I enjoy art of all types. And that my appreciation for art was based on a connectedness between me and others, other artists. My community supports arts programs and supports our schools’ arts programs. I believe that this is a fundamental component to the closeness of our community.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
I believe that the role of the City Council is to support the community’s interests in art infrastructure up to and including developing infrastructure. It is important that the City Council engage stakeholders and find opportunities to support and enhance arts and cultural opportunities. I am currently involved with such an opportunity called the Celebration of the Arts in La Verne. This celebration is open to the community including school children at every K-12 school in the city.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
My vision for the city is to have arts thrive in the city in the many forms. I want residents, especially children, to have the opportunity to engage in the arts in their schools and in the community. I think that the city can and should support the arts and culture by providing access to performance halls, teachers and classes to learn and perform their arts. The school district in La Verne has strong support for the visual and performing arts.
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
If elected, I will work to continue and bolster the offerings available in and around our community by engaging the various stakeholders and finding innovative solutions.
