City: Redondo Beach
Position Seeking: City Council – District 1
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
Worldwide experiences, Europe, China, Japan, Singapore, Hongkong, India, Africa that included “hard arts” such as paintings, sculpture, buildings. One of my most memorable experiences was standing before “David” in Florence, absolutely awestruck. Vienna Boys Choir was another give the chills type of thing for me. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra was incredible not just because of the music but the concert hall is phenomenal.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
For example Redondo Beach has the PAC which has struggled but is now gaining ground, City Council needs to have the vision to support these type of venues both financially and in promotional ways during good times and bad. More on this subject below under question 3.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
We need to clean our city up, some of our major streets have continued fall into decay. One of the items on my “platform” is to incentivize local businesses to fix up their storefronts and make things more attractive in general. Arts can provide a catalyst for this type of community improvement, I am especially supportive of sculpted or 3 dimensional works as I find them to have the most impact and ability to create a core identity that can be built upon. Bean in Chicago is one of my favorites, and Hans Christian Andersen in New York. I would love to see a bronze ship sculpture as a centerpiece of our Waterfront redevelopment, especially if it was a climbing sculpture, that would make a great identity piece!
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
I will need to do more research before I could address this intelligently, sorry…
