Artistic Director

Chamber Music Northwest

Portland, OR

Chamber Music Northwest, one of the nation’s leading producers and presenters of chamber music, seeks an engaging and dynamic musical leader to succeed David Shifrin as its new Artistic Director, beginning in 2020. The Artistic Director will conceive, articulate, and implement the artistic vision for CMNW.  The Artistic Director will continue to build the organization’s reputation as an internationally recognized music organization known for its artistic excellence, innovation, and creative diversity.

Now in its 48th season, Chamber Music Northwest produces more than 100 concerts and events annually, including a Summer Festival, a year-round season of presentations, outreach and educational programs, and innovative collaborations with other arts groups. CMNW engages the finest musicians and composers, from rising star members of our Protégé Project to world-renowned artists. With nearly 100 newly commissioned works and premieres, CMNW is also a national leader in the creation of new music. As one of the region’s most acclaimed and well-run arts organizations, it boasts an exceptional record of nearly four decades of balanced budgets, a substantial endowment, and significant operating reserves.

CMNW will consider an individual, a pair of individuals, or a collaborative ensemble as its next Artistic Director. Ideal candidates will be critically acclaimed musicians with extensive performance experience, and will be engaging, enthusiastic, and persuasive advocates and ambassadors for chamber music in all its diversity.  Candidates should possess extensive and ongoing professional relationships with concert artists, composers and artist representatives, and an understanding of the dynamics of artists working together in ensembles. Equally important, candidates will have a vision for both preserving and advancing chamber music into the future through education and support of young and early-career musicians, development of new music, exploration of innovative venues, styles of presentation, and audience engagement.
