Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG)
(This position is an As Needed/Intermittent Staff Position with no health care benefits.)
The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG), located in Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood seeks an Assistant Curator. Reporting to the Curators, the Assistant Curator will work on the research, development, organization and implementation of exhibitions at the gallery. This is a part-time, as needed position and is not eligible for benefits.
Established in 1954, LAMAG is the longest running institution in Los Angeles devoted solely to exhibiting art. The gallery focuses on artists from Los Angeles – in particular underrepresented artists whose work may not otherwise have found a platform. Our exhibitions, educational and public programs aim to inspire conversation about the contemporary issues and ideas that resonate most with the people of Los Angeles. The LAMAG is a facility of the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assisting curators with all aspects of exhibition development, organization and implementation
- Providing support to curators, including filing, correspondence, calendars and scheduling.
- Assisting with ADA compliance
- Liaising with exhibiting artists regarding loans, installation and scheduling
- Liaising with technical team of preparators and gallery attendants
- Maintaining master exhibit checklist
- Maintaining and updating exhibit installation schedule
- Preparing and coordinating all exhibition related paperwork including condition reports and loan forms
- Coordinating and proofing all interpretative texts and print materials including vinyl, labels, gallery guides, web texts and cards
- Soliciting images from all partners, lenders, artists and galleries and managing image bank for press and internal use
- Assisting in coordinating and managing exhibition documentation
- Providing support for any related receptions or events
- Assist in supervising on weekends, after hours events etc
- Perform other routine administration duties as needed.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Arts (design, literary, media/communication, performing, and/or visual), Cultural Studies, Literature, English, Art History, Art Administration, or a closely related field
- Four years of paid experience within the last ten years in assisting and coordinating a program in a gallery, non-profit institution or museum.
- Outstanding organizational skills, a rigorous and meticulous approach to your work with a strong attention to detail
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Demonstrable ability to take initiative and complete projects from start to finish
- Ability to work simultaneously on several projects in a demanding, fast-paced work environment
- Flexibility in meeting shifting demands and priorities with proven ability to meet multiple deadlines.
- In depth understanding of contemporary art, exhibition-making and art in Los Angeles.
- Knowledge in Adobe Suite, database management, Microsoft suite
