The AV Technical Manager reports to the Director of Operations and supports the organization’s needs within various departments, primarily Exhibitions, Education and Operations. The AV Technical Manager works directly with the Director of each of these departments throughout the year to successfully complete exhibition projects and provide event and program technical support as needed.
For the Exhibitions Department the AV Technical Manager is responsible for performing a variety of tasks specific to the care and presentation of media-based artworks and provides support for all technical aspects and production needs for all exhibitions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting in the technical design and implementation of equipment for complex exhibition installations, receiving, mounting and dispersing media-based loans and works in the permanent collection, maintaining the media-based works in MOCA’s permanent collection, and assisting with projection, audio engineering and lighting. Other duties may include: assisting in the preparation of exhibitions, including the handling of artworks, fabrication, construction and routine maintenance. The AV Technical Manager will coordinate with the Registration and Curatorial departments, and visiting artists and curators while working on exhibition installations and permanent collection inventory. As a contemporary art museum MOCA presents both conventional and nonconventional art forms that can be experimental in nature. Projects at the museum vary greatly and as such the AV Technical Manager will be required to perform a variety of tasks beyond the technical application of equipment.
For Education and Public Programs the AV Technical Manager performs a variety of tasks specific to the preparation and implementation of public programs (including performances, lectures, film and video screenings) and provides support for all technical aspects and production needs of the Department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with video projection, live sound engineering, managing all production elements including lighting for museum programming (presentations and performances), and receiving and testing media for various public programs in advance of events.
For the Operations Department the AV Technical Manager oversees the technical support for rental client events, special corporate donor events, organizational meetings and presentations, and other live programming as needed. The AV Technical Manager will provide direct support to the Operations-related events and will also assign responsibilities to a team of temporary AV technicians to provide production coverage for the actual live events, some of which may occur on the same day or when other activities may need to be addressed. The use of this team of temporary AV technicians also applies to other department’s events and projects as needed. The AV Technical Manager will have technical oversight of the Ahmanson Auditorium, a 150 seat theater venue and The David Laventhol Board Room - both located at the Grand Avenue building, and a 90 seat screening room at the Geffen Contemporary building. Oversight responsibilities include maintenance and repairs to venue lighting, sound and AV equipment and purchasing of necessary equipment and supplies.
- Possession of a BA in Film/Video Production, Audio Production, Theater, Media Arts, Visual Arts, or closely related field. Work experience may be applied towards a college degree.
- A minimum of five years experience in the operation and maintenance of audio/visual, sound and lighting equipment on a professional level required.
- Production management or technical director experience in a theater venue or live performance environment.
- Working knowledge of analog and digital audio mixers and lighting console operation.
- Experience providing support for live events with portable sound systems, including live music events.
- Experience in the safe handling of artworks and technical equipment, including crating, packing, unpacking and installation.
- Experience successfully managing and training production staff.
- The ability to work effectively and efficiently with museum staff, artists, curators and outside contractors and clients to accomplish projects with high production standards on all projects.
- Must be able to multi-task on numerous projects and effectively delegate to the AV production team while overseeing successful outcomes.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required for events and programs.
- Experience in the research, maintenance, and operation of audio, video, and film required.
- Working knowledge of various computer software skills including Sketchup, Rhino or other CAD based programs strongly preferred.
- Audio and video editing and archiving experience preferred.
- Knowledgeable in the proper and safe use of hand tools and shop equipment.
- Advanced electrical knowledge preferred.
- Knowledge of contemporary art required.
- Work in consultation with other departments in the planning, preparation and implementation of AV technical services for current and future institutional needs, primarily in conjunction with the Exhibitions, Education and Operation departments.
- Work with and manage staff and vendors as needed to properly operate and maintain AV, sound and lighting equipment inventory. Purchase supplies and equipment where necessary in coordination with MOCA management.
- Manage the use of the organization’s AV, sound and lighting inventory and oversee the safe operation of all equipment.
- Maintain MOCA’s permanent collection media archive.
- Assist in handling, packing and receiving works of art, especially with regard to technical needs; maintain related documentation and records.
- As necessary, make recommendations to MOCA management on upgrades to equipment inventory or venue technical requirements.
- Oversee, manage and provide technical guidance and training to a core team of temporary AV technical staff for the safe and efficient installation and successful operation of equipment related to exhibitions, programs and events.
- Prepare project budgets and assist in preparation of organizational budgets as requested and monitor departmental expenses during the year.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: sit/stand for extended periods of time, bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions, climb up and down stairs/ladders, bend, stoop, and extend to move and retrieve materials, pull, push, and lift, reach both above and below shoulder height, be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to visually inspect work. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Adept auditory perception, including closely distinguishing and understanding sound mix and audio levels. Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required. Heavy usage of computers and phones required.
