Call for Artists to Lead Community Engagement Activities

Open Scene

Urbana, IL

Open Scene is seeking four artists to lead arts workshops for twelve youth (ages 16-24) and ten community stakeholders in Urbana, IL.

In spring 2017, each selected artist or artist group will lead a weekend "intensive" with participants to explore themes of social justice and/or community development through an art discipline. Activities will begin on Friday evening and end on Sunday afternoon. Please refer to the application form for a list of available weekends to select from.

Selected artists will receive a total payment of $3,000 for artist fees, transportation to and from Urbana, food, and lodging.

This opportunity is open to all professional artists, age 18 or older, residing in the United States. All artistic disciplines, genres, styles, and media will be considered. Submissions will be evaluated based on demonstration of artistic quality; demonstration of experience in leading engagement activities, especially for youth and marginalized communities; and appropriateness of method for inclusive, youth-centered, public events.

Open Scene is partnership between the City of Urbana and the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UCIMC), which aims to create a plan for reclaiming the city's center through arts-based dialogues that directly incorporate the experiences of youth.
