Call for Filipinx-American Visual Artists: Araw Ng Mga Patay

Day of the Dead curated by Nica Aquino

Highland Park, CA

Call for art by Filipinx-American visual artists for Day of the Dead. Curated by Nica Aquino with assistance from Anna Calubayan.

Giving offerings to our ancestors is an indigenous practice in the so-called Philippines that predates Catholocism. It is a way of honoring our ancestors & the time they spent with us on this physical plane. Once a year, many cultures around the world take the time to honor our ancestors, such as 'Dia de los Muertos' in Mexico, 'Pchum Ben' in Cambodia & many more. In Philippine culture, 'Araw Ng Mga Patay' (translating to Day of the Dead in Tagalog - a Philippine language) is a day we reflect on the remembrance of our passed loved ones.

The intention of this exhibition is to highlight how Filipinx-American visual artists use art as a platform to honor our loved ones in the spirit world. Visual artworks selected for this exhibition become an offering to our ancestors in itself.
