Pathway to Wellness

 A project of LA Commons, Wellness Partners, Jordan High School

LA Commons seek a lead artist for Fall 2017 to Summer 2018. LA Commons

develops artistic and cultural projects that reveal the unique stories of

L.A.’s Neighborhoods and engage visitors through cultural tours. LA

Commons is partnering with Wellness Partners, community members and

students from Watts to increase utilization of the wellness center at

Jordan High.

To address the urgent need to include clinic use, the goal for Pathway to

Wellness is to implement an artistic approach to strengthening clinic

awareness among students, and broader community through a high visibility

art installation. Lead artist will direct a team of youth (ages 15-25

years) to collect stories from the community, and design an artistic

“Pathway to Wellness”.

Three major interventions include: 1) a story summit to gather hundreds of

narratives from the community; 2) transformation of these stories into a

mural by professional & youth artists, and 3) engagement of at least 150

Jordan High students during the school day in making art.

*The Role the Artist/Designers in this project will be:*

1. To participate in story/image gathering process with the community

arts team.

2. To mentor Core Youth Arts Team to further youth in the development of

skills in image making, design, and creating the art (12-15 core youth

artists age 15-25).

3. To create final artworks based on youth designs and community images


4. To respond to feedback from the design review process

5. To attend the Opening Celebration


Project will begin on September 1st, 2017 and end June 15, 2018 and take

place at Jordan High School and other local venues.

$3750 stipend for Lead Artist *Fee includes conducting weekly workshops

with a team of youth, story gathering, and completion of design review and

final artwork.
