The Los Angeles City Council approved a plan to fund mural preservation, creation, and restoration throughout the city this morning.  All Councilmembers present voted to approve the funding, which will be coordinated through the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Last October, the City Council adopted an ordinance to allow the creation of new original art murals – one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, hand-tiled or digitally printed images on a building exterior that does not contain a commercial message and the preservation of existing vintage art murals on private property. The ordinance prohibited murals on single-family residences.

Councilmember José Huizar, the leading force on the City Council in adopting the recent mural ordinance, announced he has commissioned nine artists to paint murals on utility boxes on East First Street in Boyle Heights.  

The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to declare Saturday, October 12, 2013, “Mural Day” in the City of Los Angeles in recognition of  the new mural ordinance going into effect after an eleven year moratorium on murals on private property.

In the wake of the City of Los Angeles City Planning Commission's recent hearing on the proposed mural ordinance, Councilmember José Huizar invites you to share your thoughts, critiques, and concerns about the proposed legislation by attending a special workshop in Council District 14.

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing for the new City of Los Angeles mural ordinance on Thursday July 12 at City Hall Room 350 starting at 8:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, December 7th, Councilmember José Huizar invites Muralists, Art Devotees, and the community to review the draft mural ordinance with Council District 14 and Tanner Blackman from the City Planning Department.  Mr. Blackman will guide attendees through the proposed draft ordinance allowing murals on private property point by point and seek recommendations and input from artists and the community.
