DESCRIPTION
Classroom Connections Outreach Assistants conduct educational activities for the Carpenter Center’s Classroom Connections program. Classroom Connections is a three-part program partnering the Carpenter Center’s touring artists with local students, primarily from the Long Beach Unified School District. Pre-performance Introductory Workshops in the classroom illustrate the process of creating art (inspiration, conception, rehearsal, discussion) as well as the product itself (performance). Students meet the artist during the Artist Workshop to observe or participate in specific parts of the process. The program culminates with a special daytime Performance by the artist at the Carpenter Center. Approximately 1,000 students are served during each program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but not limited to:
- Work with education coordinator and artists prior to the workshops to create lesson plans and study guides
- Conduct 45 minute Introductory Workshops prior to Artist Workshops, introduce the artistic genre and theatre etiquette to students grades 1-5 at six different schools per program
- Accompany artists to each school to help facilitate Artist Workshops
- Attend and help facilitate the daytime Performance at the Carpenter Center
Requirements
- Background check required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Must have own, reliable transportation
- Must be available for most of the dates and times listed below
- Ability to speak knowledgeably about the performing arts and be engaging to children ages 6-11
- Previous teaching experience OR previous experience in the performing arts preferred
- Ability to collaborate on lesson plans with education coordinator and artists
- Ability to follow lesson plans consistently from classroom to classroom, modifying as planned for the age of students

Introductory Workshops: 1/22/18 – 1/26/18 8:00am – 1:30pm
Artist Workshops: 1/29/18 – 2/1/18 8:30am – 1:00pm
Performance: 2/2/18 10:00am – 11:00am
Program #2: Martha Redbone – Grades 3, 4, & 5
Introductory Workshops: 4/16/18 – 4/20/18 8:00am – 1:45pm
Artist Workshops: 4/23/18 – 4/26/18 9:00am – 2:45pm
Performance: 4/27/18 10:00am – 11:00am
compensation
$16/hour, non-exempt, approximately 25 hours per program
