Communications and Media Production Intern

Armory Center for the Arts


Under the guidance of the Armory Communications team, you will assist with day-to-day media production and PR tasks at Armory Center for the Arts — a contemporary arts center in Pasadena. The Armory produces contemporary art exhibitions and delivers vibrant art education programs to children, teens, adults, and families throughout the region. You will gain valuable, real-world experience contributing as an equal member of the Armory Communications team.

The internship is intended for outstanding students who are members of groups underrepresented in museums and visual arts organizations, including but not limited to individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent. Intern candidates are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts. Family members of Armory staff or board members are ineligible, as are past Armory Getty interns.

The Communications Media & Production Internship will offer the selected undergraduate student the opportunity to:
Receive training and mentorship from the Armory's Communications Team
Gain hands-on experience in production aspects of media and design
Develop an understanding of and experience in the daily workings of a multi-disciplinary community-based arts organization
References upon successful completion of your internship
Acquire Class Credit (if applicable)
Additionally, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Be a currently enrolled undergraduate. Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2021.
Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and
Be a United States citizen or permanent resident.
The ideal candidate is a full-time undergraduate student whose focus is photography, film/video, media design, graphic design, visual arts, marketing, or other communications-related fields.
Candidates should have experience in some or all of the following:
be proficient in Mac OS (iMovie, iPhoto, etc.)
be proficient in G-Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar, Slides, etc.)
be proficient Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
be social media savvy (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)
have good design instincts
have strong photography and photo editing skills
have strong video skills (pre-production, production, post-production)
have excellent verbal, written, and listening skills
follow instructions and ask thoughtful questions
have a positive attitude and a strong desire to learn
manage multiple tasks in a high-energy office environment

Previous internships or other relevant experiences in Communications are a plus, as are basic HTML coding skills and a penchant for marketing and storytelling. Adobe Premiere and After Effects experience is a huge plus.

Supervision and Training
Intern will report directly to the Communications and Marketing Manager and will assist with:

Documenting on-site and off-site programs and events (video and photo)
Creating print marketing materials (postcards, flyers, etc.)
Documenting/editing/formatting short videos and photos to promote our education and exhibition programs on social media & website
Creating captions for Armory social media posts
Basic updates to our website using the SilverStripe Content Management System (CMS)

Duration and Compensation
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week internship (Monday through Friday). The internship must take place during a consecutive ten-week period beginning no sooner than June 7, 2021 and ending no later than August 27, 2021. Depending on museum opening protocols, this internship is intended to be a hybrid of remote and in person with more work being done remotely. This will be discussed and decided with our intern candidates. Pay rate is $15/hr.
