Salary Range: $72,000 - $80,000

The International Documentary Association (IDA) seeks a Controller who is motivated to use their skills and talents to advance our work building and serving the needs of a thriving documentary culture. The IDA is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides funding, resources and services to filmmakers, creates community across a diverse nonfiction field, and defends the rights and freedoms of documentary artists, activists, and journalists around the world.

The Controller is an integral member of IDA’s senior staff, working collaboratively to ensure the organization’s overall health through effective and efficient financial management. We are looking for someone with a passion for our mission and values, the ability to help develop a long-term vision and plan for the financial health of the organization, and expert-level knowledge of nonprofit financial accounting and systems. The Controller will ensure that IDA has the financial systems in place to: support dynamic and responsive program implementation; provide excellent service to IDA’s members, sponsored film projects, and filmmaker grantees; comply with all relevant state and national laws, and conduct a flawless annual audit.

The Controller is supported by a full-time Accounting Manager. The Controller leads all day-to-day finance operations, overseeing an organizational budget of approximately $4 million and the accounting functions of a high-volume fiscal sponsorship program that administers approximately $9 million to documentary projects annually.

The Controller reports to the Executive Director and Deputy Director and is based in our offices in Los Angeles.



Key Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:


● Participate in driving the organizational direction as a member of the leadership team.

● Work collaboratively with staff and the Board of Directors to develop both strategic and operational finance-related goals that support our strategic plan.

● Lead our annual organizational budgeting process ensuring it is consistent with IDA’s strategic goals and priorities. Work closely with IDA staff on budgeting, financial planning, and projections.

● Prepare reports for the Board of Directors under the direction of the Executive Director, including reports to the audit and finance committees.



● Oversee all financial accounting systems and functions (including A/R, A/P, payroll, and tax) and maintain internal fiscal controls that consistently result in a fully compliant annual audit.

● Lead the operations of the accounting department, including the design of a departmental structure well-suited for achieving our goals and maintain a streamlined, well-documented staff and filmmaker-friendly system of accounting policies and procedures.

● Lead the development of the annual budget, working closely with senior leadership and program staff to ensure a smooth process and timely delivery.

● Ensure that day-to-day cash flow and cash projections are strong and that we effectively manage and strengthen our overall cash position and net assets.

● Generate monthly financial documents, and timely financial analysis, ensuring that decisions are made based on an accurate financial position. Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues.

● Follow local, state, and federal government regulations, reporting requirements and tax filings.

● Lead the annual financial audit and tax return preparation with outside auditors. Manage the board audit committee, and ensure an efficient audit process.

● Handle financial aspects of grant proposal development and execution, including review of grant budgets and agreements, and implementation of systems to generate grant-level and program-level reporting that allocates income and expenses to specific grants and accurately tracks expenses against specific grants. This includes managing and ensuring compliance with financial requirements of government and multi-year grant agreements.

● Partner with development and programmatic staff to provide timely and accurate financial reports, cost reports and projections as needed for grant proposals, reporting, and planning purposes.


Human Resources

● Partner with Deputy Director on strategic human resources functions.

● Manage compliance issues and stay up to date on evolving state and national regulations related to employment.

● Oversee compensation and benefits administration through Zenefits, including bi-monthly payroll, health insurance, 401K plan administration, and flexible spending accounts.

● Partner with Deputy Director on all human resource functions including, hiring, employee onboarding and orientation, compensation reviews, and terminations.



Desired skills and attributes:

● You are an experienced manager and have demonstrated facilitative leadership skills.

● You are a skilled communicator, able to influence and build consensus, have proven experience partnering with staff across all levels of an organization, and can effectively translate complex financial information for program and development staff.

● You are highly collaborative, able to balance many competing priorities and willing to go the extra mile to get the job done.

● You are organized, calm under pressure, have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, and the sound judgment needed to make timely, well-informed decisions.

● You are tech-savvy and motivated to seek and implement technological solutions to improve process and workflow.

● You have a Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting or equivalent experience; CPA, or equivalent professional experience is preferred.

● You have at least three years experience in a lead financial management role in a nonprofit organization, at least ten years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, and have worked at an organization with multiple cost and revenue centers. Experience at an organization with a mid-size to large fiscal sponsorship program is highly valued.
