Dramatic Results (DR), an award-winning educational arts non-profit based in Long Beach, CA, is a 26-year old agency that builds collaborative learning environments by integrating hands-on, artistic experiences with STEM and ELA. The agency’s focus is on under-served and at-risk youth, particularly in Title 1 schools throughout Los Angeles County.
Dramatic Results is looking for a Curriculum and Instruction Specialist to lead the development and implementation of curricula for a 2018-2022 AAEDD federal project focused on the needs of low-income GATE/EXCEL middle school students. The goal of this federal Art of Building a City (ABC) Ecosystem Project is to: a) Develop high-quality arts-integrated programming across multiple disciplines that aligns to national standards; b) Build a community-based “ecosystem” of Arts/Design professionals to support a 3-part Scholars Program; and c) Test and disseminate evidence-based instructional materials, a collaborative ecosystem model, and the ABC Professional Development Program digitally, via conference presentations and articles/blogs.
Our ideal candidate would be: passionate about arts integration, love being in the classroom and developing curricula, works well collaboratively with both fellow arts educators and STEAM professionals on PBL, proactive, diplomatic, open-minded, team and process-oriented. DR needs someone who believes in the power of art as a transformative tool and can act as an effective supervisor to design, build, deliver, and modify equitable curriculum/programs.
- 5+ years’ experience with K-12 public education; managerial background preferred
- Advanced college degree preferred
- Artist, with a background in arts integration
- Fluent in Spanish, additional languages preferred
- Related experience working with diverse populations
- Capable of writing lesson plans that align with state and national educational standards
- Experience with program evaluation and the Design Thinking Process
- Superior writing and editing skills
- Advanced communication and interpersonal skills
- Lifelong learner—constantly seeking to improve their craft and professional expertise
- Highly creative with the ability to think outside of the box
- Experience presenting at conferences preferred
- Oversee development/alignment of lesson plans with content standards, agenda maintenance, curriculum overview, and in-office program documentation
- Help create, pilot, plan, and expand new in-class and extended day programs; making sure curriculum content aligns to content standards and individual classroom needs
- Develop and teach STEAM, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and Math in a Basket (MIAB) programs, as needed
- Co-Lead the annual Summer STEAM Institute
- Work with Teaching Artists to craft program details, descriptions, arc, and overview, for AAEDD grant, as well as non-federal programs
- Meet with classroom teachers, administration, and other stakeholders to identify needs and objectives of DR programs
- Build buy-in with classroom teachers regarding lesson plans and agendas
- Assist with material needs and visuals for DR marketing/communications
- Update evaluators regarding all curriculum changes and lesson feedback
- Supervise digital resources for program implementation/dissemination/teacher training
- In cooperation with the Director of Operations plan, create, and implement professional development for Teaching Artists (TA)
- Assist in materials preparation for workshops, conferences, and DR programs
- Support in ideation, scheduling, mapping, and developing program models to meet the objective of specific federal grants; provide written content for grants as needed
- Support recruitment, hiring, and supervision of Teaching Artists (TA)
- Ensure TA expectations and processes are met; manage for positive outcomes
- Develop, implement and improve TA reporting systems
- Assist with program evaluation processes
- Meet and cultivate positive relationships with community partners to support programs
- Attend and present at board meetings as needed
- Participate in webinars related to the scope of work i.e. Arts Integration Conference
- Work with volunteers as needed
Day in the Life:
You start your Wednesday in Walnut at 8:15 AM, overseeing two morning STEAM classes for 2nd grade. After warming-up, you will work with the students on their pollination plays, connecting performances to the science lesson their teacher covered last week. You head back to Long Beach, and after grabbing a quick lunch/answering emails from that morning, you co-teach an hour-long SEL lesson with 20, 4th and 5th graders. You’ve been working with the new Teaching Artist on classroom management and growth mindset, so you hope to see some of the strategies you’ve suggested implemented today. There are a few tearful breakdowns during the class, but the session concludes with hugs and affirmation. After this, you head back to the office for DR’s weekly staff meeting, during which you debrief the team on the programs you attended. You meet with DR’s Program Manager afterwards to discuss a series of Saturday workshops the agency has just received funds for. Based on her feedback you start to create a curriculum plan for the 10-week program with a series of community partners—tomorrow you’ll reach out to local organizations to gain buy-in and finalize schedules. You conclude your day knowing that in just 8 hours you’ve impacted nearly 100 students across LA County!
