City: San Dimas
Position Seeking: Mayor
Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.
I cannot describe one meaningful experience with art that had an impact on me. I have always liked music, drama, and visual arts. I have no talent, but I enjoy photography, drawing and painting.
Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?
The city has a big role in supporting and developing the regions art and cultural infrastructure. San Dimas, in conjunction with the San Dimas Festival of Arts, created a number of public art projects in the city, including statutes, a large stone mural honoring the Tongva Tribe of native americans, and the restoration of historic buildings. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a number of arts classes with excellent instructors. I have personally taken drawing and painting classes.
Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?
My primary objective is maintaining the quality of life in San Dimas. The appearance of the city is an important element of the quality of life. The San Dimas Festival of Arts, with support from the City, presents two art exhibitions a year, and a monthly art show and sale in the historic Walker House. Our local school district, Bonita Unified School District, recently built a professional quality performing arts center on the campus of San Dimas High School for the use of all of the schools in the district, and the community. The performing arts center was paid for by a bond issue supported by the taxpayers of the city.and the rest of the district.
Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?
Other than providing the setting for movies and television program episodes on occasion, San Dimas has very little effect on the creative economy and Los Angeles County artistic community. Our efforts are focused more on creating opportunities for our residents to participate in activities that enrich their lives.
