Venice Arts, a 25 year-old nonprofit media arts organization working primarily with low-income youth, seeks an experienced, versatile, and personable Director of Development, who can articulate Venice Arts’ vision and impacts with enthusiasm and passion, while attending to the daily, organizational details so critical to success. The Director of Development is well-versed in all aspects of fundraising and communications, with deep experience in individual and corporate donor development, events, and multi-platform fundraising campaigns. Experience in a leadership role with capital or expansion campaigns a plus. Roles and responsibilities include:
- Help steward the long-term organizational vision, both internally and externally.
- Provide leadership to the Board: attend meetings, steward assigned Directors, staff Committees.
- Represent Venice Arts externally through membership on the Venice Chamber, at conferences, and in other areas, as assigned.
Development Leadership and Responsibilities
Development Planning and Analysis
- Maintain and update Venice Arts’ multi-year, comprehensive development plan with clear benchmarks for prospecting, cultivation, stewarding, and dollars raised.
- Work in partnership with the Director of Grants and Administration to assure that grants-based data and planning is integrated into the overall Development Plan.
- Maintain the development calendars and development project-management systems.
- Assure that data is regularly and consistently entered into existing tracking mechanisms (Donor Pyramid, Annual Development Analysis, Top 25, Lapsed Donors, other) to track and communicate about Venice Arts’ fundraising successes and challenges.
- Regularly analyze development data, including progress toward benchmarks, both for the Dev/Comm Team (monthly) and the Board (bi-monthly, year-end).
Individual and Corporate Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Oversee and manage a personal portfolio of at least 25 individual and/or corporate donors or prospects, actively building these relationships through regular meetings, phone calls, emails, and other communications, tracking all efforts, and regularly reporting on outcomes.
- Lead the spring “Camp” campaign and the year-end campaign, including the timely creation of all campaign materials, modified to be effective across multiple platforms (print, social media, electronic, and web).
- Serve as the lead for all fundraising events, including the Gala and other, smaller annual events (3-4 per year); direct and work closely with the Gala Event Producer and a Gala committee; guide all post-event communications and analysis
Communications and Marketing
- Oversee agency-wide public relations and marketing, with an emphasis on organizational and fundraising communications; approve program-based communications.
- Assure that website communications are regularly updated including news, features, and donor acknowledgments.
- Assure that social media feeds are regularly updated.
- Manage all image and media use requests, press outreach.
- Provide a quarterly analysis of marketing and communications outcomes.
- Supervise the Development Associate in responding to rental inquiries, including site visits.
- Process contracts and payment processing for venue rentals.
- Oversee and manage secured rental activities.
- Supervise the Development and Communications Associate
- Supervise Development and/or Market Interns.
The ideal candidate has had at least five, and preferably 10 years of experience in fund development, with five years in an executive/management level preferred. She or he is personable, energetic, and an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing. She or he is extremely well organized, versatile, and adept at managing multiple projects and deadlines with grace. A successful candidate demonstrates the skills and personal traits that allow her or him to help drive a future vision with enthusiasm and passion, while attending to the daily, organizational details so critical to success. A desire to work in a robust, small- to mid-sized community-based organization, with an understanding of its opportunities and limitations, required.
The ideal candidate is exceptionally well-versed in all aspects of fund development, including grants, with depth of experience in individual and corporate donor development, events, and multiplatform fundraising campaigns. Experience in a leadership role with capital or expansion campaigns, a plus. Must have experience in marketing/communications, demonstrating an understanding of how to develop compelling communications across multiple platforms. Must have excellent planning and organizational skills, be highly detailed oriented, and have experience effectively managing others.
Candidate is comfortable with data software and systems to assure that data is consistently and accurately entered and pulled to inform regular fundraising analyses. Competent with donor and financial software, experience with Filemaker Pro and Quickbooks a plus. An individual with a background in the arts, or experience in arts education and/or youth development a plus, as is competency with Adobe Suite.
Compensation: This is an exempt position. The salary range is $65,000-$75,000 commensurate with experience, with room for growth. Medical, vacation, holiday package, employee-funded 401(k).
