ABOUT ARTS FOR LA
Arts for LA (AFLA) is a voice for the arts in Greater Los Angeles that informs, engages, and mobilizes individuals and organizations to advocate for access to the arts across all communities; arts education for every student; robust investment in the arts; and inclusion of diverse and underrepresented voices. Arts for LA invests in leadership development; growing networks of civically engaged advocates; building deep relationships with elected officials; and working in partnership across sectors to make LA a vibrant, prosperous, creative, and healthy society.
Arts for LA seeks a full-time Director of Organizing to engage a dynamic community of arts and culture arts organizations, artists and arts advocates. The position will redevelop and implement a professional development program focused on advocacy training. The Director of Organizing is also responsible for implementing one annual conference and convenings of and for the field. The Director of Organizing will work closely with the Executive Director and may oversee the supervision of support staff (as the team grows), consultants, contractors, vendors and volunteers as required.
Strategic Visioning; Leadership
- Provide strategic vision and direction with staff and leaders for building AFLA’s organizing strategies, focused on building power at the county and city level to succeed in policy changes
- Research, plan, implement, and evaluate, together with leaders and staff, effective and winnable campaigns
- Facilitate and participate in local coalitions to advance community interests and needs aligned with AFLA’s vision, mission and values.
- Build alliances with partner organizations, public officials, businesses and residents to build local initiatives around the needs and wants of the community
Base-Building and Leadership Development:
- Recruit, retain, and support ongoing leadership development of ACTIVATE leaders and members.
- Engage community members through effective outreach activities such as community listening, committee/taskforce meetings, and participating in community and public events.
- Plan, develop and deliver a training curriculum to current leaders and/or emergent leaders.
- Oversee the development and use of AFLA’s outreach tools, leadership development curriculum, and campaign development resources
Organizational Leadership Development, Collaboration Responsibilities, and Other Team Work:
- Develop and oversee AFLA’s annual work plan, budget, database and priorities.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm for AFLA and a strong commitment to its mission, including its community building vision and values
- Work with AFLA director team and community leaders to identify emerging issues, strategies and campaigns that are responsive to both community needs and organizational priorities
- Be an active member on AFLA’s director leadership team by supporting staff leadership development, implementing organizational policies, and cross-program collaboration
- Participate in and contribute to the development of AFLA events and programs; including the annual conference
- Prepare written reports, database updates, and meeting summaries
- Work with the development team to research, solicit, and develop proposals; and submit reports.
Ideal candidates should hold the following qualifications and experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years’ experience in community organizing and at least 3 years of supervisory experience in related field including education, health, labor, housing and/or legislative issue advocacy
- Ability to motivate, mentor, and develop skills among team members including AFLA community members
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including ability to facilitate and train
- Experience with base building, community listening, committee/taskforce meetings, leadership development, and mobilization
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize, maintain focus in fast paced setting, and take initiative
- Self-starter with the ability to work remotely, independently, and complete tasks in a timely manner
- Knowledge of campaign and organizing tools and technology
- Strong analytical skills to do research related to issues on which the community is organizing
- Has a strong performance orientation and thinks strategically
- Demonstrated ability to write curricula
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends
- Licensed driver with reliable transportation and ability to meet AFLA’s minimum auto insurance requirement
PREFERRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED SKILLS
- experience with non profit board management
