Art Gallery Director

Description:
TAG Gallery seeks an energetic, ambitious individual as Gallery Director, to manage sales, cultivate clients, produce exhibitions, and oversee gallery operations. Doing business for over 20 years in Santa Monica and now located in Bergamot Station - the largest gallery complex in the Western U.S. - TAG offers a rare opportunity for an aspiring gallerist to gain experience and build a reputation in the ever-expanding Los Angeles gallery world.
The ideal candidate must be:
- Outgoing and energetic
- Experienced in gallery sales and operations
- Able to create and cultivate client relationships
- Able to work effectively with exhibiting artists
- A strong written communicator with PR and marketing focus
- An organized multi-tasker, with strong follow-through
- Able to train and supervise administrative staff and interns
Duties and responsibilities include:
Sales and Marketing
- Develop marketing and advertising campaigns for all gallery exhibitions
- Write and produce marketing and promotional materials, including press releases, artist bios, exhibition announcements and advertising
- Create content for gallery’s social media outlets
- Publicize and attend gallery receptions and special events
- Cultivate client relationships and follow up on all potential sales interest
- Cultivate relationships with press and community leaders
- Maintain a cordial, proactive sales presence in the gallery at all times
Gallery Administration
- Manage day-to-day gallery operations
- Supervise administrative assistant
- Recruit, train and supervise gallery interns
- Manage and monitor gallery systems including inventory, all mailing lists
- Interface with gallery board and attend monthly meetings
Artist Relations
- Work closely with artists in planning and publicizing exhibitions
- Assist artists in producing sales collateral materials
- Communicate with artists regarding exhibition timelines, production matters, installation, delivery of artwork, and other matters as needed
- Ensure complete and accurate inventory of artists’ work
Qualifications include:
- BA in relevant field; MA preferred
- Previous gallery experience; sales experience preferred
- Knowledge of contemporary art and LA art market
- Excellent writing skills, with marketing and PR focus
- Working knowledge of Dropbox, Googledocs, Web Design, and Batchbook
- Facility with social media; online marketing experience preferred
Schedule and compensation:
- Full-time: Tuesday – Saturday 11-5 schedule, plus gallery receptions, special events, and meetings
- Salary and commission to be discussed in interview process
- Paid vacation and sick days provided
