Assistant House Manager for The Los Angeles Theatre Center, part-time
The Los Angeles Theatre Center is strategically positioned within the revitalized urban core of downtown Los Angeles, with four ethnically and artistically diverse companies-in-residence, including the Latino Theater Company, Robey Theater Company, Los Angeles Dance Project, and Playwrights’ Arena. The LATC is also a presenter of drama, music, film, and design programs that amplify the city’s cultural dynamism. With three traditional theatres, a black box, a convertible space, and multiple rehearsal rooms, there is always something exciting happening.
The Assistant House Manager will assist the House Manager in creating a warm and welcoming environment for patrons and rental clients. The AHM must have the leadership ability and judgment to act as HM, when required. This is a part time position with hours fluctuating with the theatre season.
All candidates must be available for the upcoming Encuentro festival, October 16 – November 9. The AHM will be required to work Thursday & Friday mornings and most weekend afternoon/evenings, during this period.
Responsibilities
- Communicate regularly with House Manager during events
- Assist with supervision of usher and concessions staff and delegates assignments
- Assist with the safety and seating of patrons/guests for five theatre spaces
- Provide outstanding customer service
- Assist with seating issues, latecomers, and tearing tickets
- Resolve patrons concerns
- Assist with pre-show setup including: tables, chairs, reserved seats, stanchions, etc.
- Coordinate set-up of lobby with rental clients, in accordance with pre-determined guidelines
- Ensure rental users and patrons follow theatre safety policies and fire codes
- Assist bartender with concession setup, sales and cleanup as needed; balance cash and inventory at end of shift
- Assist in recruiting, managing, motivating and encouraging all front of the house staff
- Provide ongoing evaluation of front-of-house procedures to facilitate continual process improvement
- Attend staff meetings as requested
- Take leadership position when House Manager is off-site
Job Requirements and Qualifications
- 3+ years of progressively responsible experience in customer service, front of house, and/or box office
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Fluency in Spanish
- Previous supervisory experience
- Theatre experience preferred
- Problem solving; ability to work in high stress situations
- Team player, works well with others, able to take direction
- Able to be flexible and multi-task in a fast paced environment
- Excellent communication skills, particularly oral
- At least 21 years of age
- Able to stand for long periods of time, climb stairs in dim lighting
- Able to lift and carry 20 lbs.
- Able to use a 2 way radio with appropriate etiquette
- Competency with the MS Word and Excel
- Quick and conscientious response to email/text/phone communications
- Must have a flexible schedule; weekday evenings and weekends required, and some weekday mornings and holidays
- Experience at a non-profit arts institution a plus
