Instructor II (Torrance Civic Chorale Director)

The City of Torrance Community Services Department is currently accepting applications for an Instructor II (Torrance Civic Chorale Director) with the Cultural Services Division. This is a recurrent, as needed position with variable hours.
About the Torrance Civic Chorale: The Torrance Civic Chorale has provided the South Bay with exceptional choral music, instruction and public performances since 1961; and consistently runs with upwards of 80 members. The Chorale performs twice a year at the James Armstrong Theatre, located in the heart of the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. In addition, the Chorale performs at various community and civic gatherings throughout the year.
About the Position: This is a part-time, hourly, as needed position. Under general supervision, the Chorale Director is responsible for selecting, preparing and conducting repertoire for the Chorale’s concerts in the spring and late fall (mid-December) of each year. The Director, additionally, has pedagogical and administrative roles to fulfill. He/ she will be responsible for teaching healthy vocal techniques and methods; coaching and assisting the chorale members to improve as vocalists through the rehearsal process. The administration aspect involves preparation and planning of each class meeting to insure that the Chorale remains on track for the planned concerts. Additionally, it relates to the numerous elements that must be coordinated to actually present each concert; from directing the accompanist working with the existing Torrance Chorale Friends (TCF) board on concert and Front-of-House logistics, procuring all requisite music and licensing for concerts, submitting information for publicity and printing, managing program budget as set by Cultural Services Division, and more.
Hours
Hours are varied and revolve generally around the class meetings on Monday evenings.
Additional rehearsal/class meetings may be required.
Independent work on the needs of the concert may be done at the Chorale Director’s convenience.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Music Education or Conducting with an emphasis in vocal pedagogy and/or choral conducting preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience in choral/music conducting.
Experience and passion for working with singers of various ages and abilities.
Significant experience in conducting and performing professional level concerts.
Understanding of, and proficiency in vocal technique, especially for older voices.
