Position
Executive Director, Angels Gate Cultural Center
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive
Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Angels
Gate Cultural Center staff, studio artists, programs, growth and fulfillment of
its mission.
Organization
Angels Gate Cultural Center is a
cultural/art park offering the local and extended community an inspiring
environment for creative discovery, exploration and enlightenment. Situated on
a bluff overlooking the Pacific, with world-class views of ocean, harbor, and
hills, the Center presents a year-round schedule of gallery exhibitions,
community arts classes and international residencies. In addition, the Center provides professional
work-studio space for 52 artists, including musicians, ceramists, painters, sculptors,
writers, photographers, printmakers and jewelers.
In the 1970s, Angels Gate Cultural
Center emerged as a group of San Pedro artists created artist’s studio and
exhibition space within unused 1940's-era Army barracks. This early "occupy" movement became
an artists’ hub that was soon well regarded for high quality art and cultural
events. Responding to the need to build
a formal relationship with the property stewards, the Los Angels Department of
Parks and Recreation, a non-profit organization was formed to manage and direct
the site.
Today, Angels Gate Cultural Center
continues as a renowned community resource for art and culture. It currently offers a wide range of community
classes for both children and adults, including Print Making, Ceramics,
Drawing, Martial Arts, Yoga and Dance classes. In addition, Angels Gate
Cultural Center brings art education into almost 30 schools in the San
Pedro/South Bay area through its Artists in the Classroom program. The Center
produces renowned art exhibits in its galleries, showcasing both local and
international artists. In conjunction
with many art and community organizations, Angels Gate Cultural Center is the
proud host of many cultural events and concerts both on-site as well as throughout
the community.
Currently programs are made possible by generous
support from the Ahmanson Foundation, California Arts Council, The Max. H.
Gluck Foundation, Los Angeles County Department of Cultural Affairs, The James
Irvine Foundation, The Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and The Weingart
Foundation.
