Seeking an Inventor/Instructor for Inner-City Arts’ innovative Creativity Lab

Inner-City Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts campus located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, serving over 7,500 children, youth, teachers and families each year, during the school day, after school and in weekend programs. We believe that creativity and the arts are the cornerstone of a high-quality education that levels the learning field across socioeconomic boundaries. Inner-City Arts is currently celebrating 25 years of service, and is developing a strategic plan to shape the vision through 2020 and beyond.

In 2011, the Creativity Lab, created by Bob Bates, co-founder and artistic director of Inner-City Arts, and supported by The Walt Disney Company, has a central purpose: to encourage students to pursue tasks and challenges using creative thinking and creative problem solving.

Inner-City Arts is seeking a creative individual from the field of Design, Science or the Maker Movement to contribute to a team of creative, inventive, committed artists and instructors. The Inventor’s primary role is to provide innovative input into the curriculum and to co-teach with the Creativity Lab’s existing team of Bob and the teaching artists to deliver a unique curriculum in the studio-lab environment. The Creativity Lab is now embarking on the next evolution of its growth, expanding its footprint both inside and outside of the organization.

The Creativity Lab implements the scientific method of test, evaluate, and adjust the design, a powerful example of “learning by doing” that approaches “mistakes” not as failures but as new opportunities for innovation and problem solving. Using simple materials to create complex structures, students learn how to use basic hand tools and operate power tools such as drill presses and scroll saws.  Students achieve an understanding that mistakes, improvisation,  and exploration are all part of the creative process.

The Creativity Lab Inventor works as a flexible, cooperative member of the Creativity Lab’s team and the Inner-City Arts’ programs team. He/she should uphold the values of artistic and scientific exploration as expressed in the philosophy and values of the program.
