Starting Salary Range: $40,000-50,000

Start Date: Early August and no later than August 18, 2014

The Lead Teaching Artist is based at the Franklin Elementary School, Santa Barbara. This is a full- time salaried position with benefits. The Lead Teaching Artist is entrusted with the musical and social

Lead Teaching Artist Responsibilities:

  •   Oversee the Music Program at the Franklin Elementary School to ensure iCAN’s philosophy and mission are practiced consistently throughout all elements of the program.

  •   Support the Program Director by establishing expectations for student musical, behavioral and academic progress.

  •   Support the development of the program and employ excellent, age-appropriate pedagogical teaching methods within a repertoire consistent with iCAN’s principles and incorporating best practices found in national and international El Sistema-inspired programs.

  •   Supervise iCAN Music Teaching Artists, site staff and volunteers, ensuring the highest level of unified program implementation possible.

  •   Together with the Program Director, regularly evaluate Teaching Artists’ daily lesson plans and site staff performance, including periodic written, oral and video reviews.

  •   Collaborate with the iCAN Music Program Director, school staff and outside evaluators in program evaluation processes in areas of data generation, collection, documentation, and analysis.

  •   Collaborate with the iCAN Music Program Director and all Music Program staff at the Franklin Elementary School to maintain excellent communication with parents/guardians and promote their engagement.

  •   Serve daily as a Teaching Artist within the after-school program.

     

Lead Teaching Artists Requirements:

  •   Four-year undergraduate music degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience highly desirable. Bachelors or Masters Degree in Music Education, California teaching credential preferred

  •   Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer

  •   Exceptional classroom management skills

  •   Experience leading ensembles - beginning through advanced levels

  •   Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; experience

    working in underserved communities

  •   Strong knowledge of music pedagogy and curriculum; experience with Kodaly, Orff, Dalcroze

    or other music methodology of great value; certification preferred

  •   Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide

    range of constituencies in a diverse community

  •   Strong commitment to social change through music – el Sistema philosophy

  •   Excellent organizational skills

  •   Fluency in Spanish a plus

  •   Proficiency with Word, Excel, Google and various apps is preferred

    Working Conditions:

  •   Must be able to work independently, using good judgment and discretion on assigned tasks and accept direction on given assignments

  •   Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the workday
