The Autry seeks a Library Collections Assistant to perform duties related to the day to day operations and management of the collections held in the Libraries and Archives of the Autry.  This is a part-time position, 24 hours/week, with duties at both the Autry Library in Griffith Park and the Braun Research Library on the historic Southwest Museum Mt. Washington campus. 


  • Provides preservation tasks related to the care and maintenance of collection items in the Libraries and Archives.
  • Processes incoming books and serials, maintains library circulation records, and retrieves and shelves books.
  • Works closely with Libraries and Archives staff to provide services to remote (inquiries received via web, telephone or mail) and visiting researchers.  Includes tracking, retrieving and returning research materials to storage areas, aiding researchers in handling rare and fragile materials, and monitoring the reading room area for security purposes.
  • Coordinates and fulfills reproduction requests.
  • Works closely with the reference staff to regularly evaluate and improve research services.
  • Tracks the inventory, ordering, receiving, and expenditures of preservation (technical) supplies.
  • Assist in the mentorship of volunteers or student interns.


  • Monitors and tracks temperature and humidity in collaboration with Conservation department.
  • Retrieves and distributes of department packages.
  • Performs specialized packing and shipping of a variety of materials for department.
  • May assist the Autry’s Electronic, Cataloging, and Imaging (ECI) Department in the digitization of collection items in the Libraries and Archives
  • Work with Libraries and Archives staff to prepare and move collections to the Autry Resources Center.
  • Performs other duties related to the day to day operations of the Libraries and Archives as requested by the Library Director.

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in a research or special collections library


  • Detail oriented.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Outlook and Excel; experience with library catalogs.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable.
  • Passion for libraries and learning.


  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs., and push a loaded library cart weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional shifting of books, involving bending, stooping, and carrying.
  • Repetitive movement associated with keyboarding.
