Manager, Community Engagement and Career Development Programs 

The Colburn School is a world-class performing arts school where a renowned faculty provides instruction in music, dance and drama to dedicated students of all ages. 

Since 1950, the school has equipped students with the skills, support and opportunity needed to achieve their highest artistic goals. The school's state-of-the-art campus is located in the “heart-of-art” of downtown Los Angeles, neighboring Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Music Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the new Broad Museum. 

Summary of position:

The Manager, Colburn Community Engagement and Career Development Programs, supports the development of world-renowned conservatory students, organizes community based programs, and interfaces with community partners across Los Angeles.  To keep the Career Development and Community Engagement offices running smoothly, the manager will need to respond to email and phone calls on a daily basis.  The successful candidate will work directly with students, arrange and respond to questions about performances in the community, help the Colburn School’s grant managers comply with the institution’s portfolio of grants, and interface with the Director of Community Engagement to implement programmatic initiatives.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Advise a portfolio of 50-60 Colburn Conservatory students on career development.
  • Produce up to 40 free, community-based performances a year as part of the Colburn Community Fellowship program.
  • Connect conservatory students interested in teaching artistry to established campus initiatives. 
  • Work in partnership with Colburn faculty, staff and students to produce a series of interactive educational performances as part of the Musical Encounters program.
  • Participate in the weekly manager’s meeting, the twice monthly editorial meeting, and the monthly Community Engagement Board Committee Meeting. 
  • Manage Colburn’s new venture competition.
  • Work with the Career Development Center team to set up workshops, a speaker series, and other services as determined by center leadership.
  • Provide administrative support, participate in curricular design, and guide site teachers for the Colburn Partners in Education sites. (The Colburn School currently provides arts instruction for 4 elementary schools in greater LA)
  • Work with the Director of Community Engagement to develop a series of Colburn inspired, online courses for children in grades K-6. 


 Minimum Education and/or Experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Music, Arts Management or Humanities is required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • A background in music is essential
  • Some prior administrative experience supporting a fast-paced environment and/or event logistics desirable.  A desire to manage office functions and bring creative thinking to an entrepreneurial environment within an academic setting is essential. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to work a flexible schedule including some weekends.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Spanish (spoken) a plus but not required.
