POSITION: Managing Director

COMPANY: The Vagrancy, Inc.

The Managing Director will work with Artistic Director Caitlin Hart in managing all financial aspects of the company, as well as strategic planning in the areas of board development, fundraising, and marketing.

This position is currently part-time (5-20 hours a week, depending on the needs of the company) and work from home. Monthly meetings with the Artistic Director are required (they may be administered over Google chat if easier). Compensation is available in the form of a modest monthly stipend of $100.  

This position will start immediately, with a period of training with the current Managing Director to ensure a smooth transition.

About The Vagrancy:
The Vagrancy is a small 501(c)(3) theatre company that produces two productions a year, as well as a bi-monthly Tactical Reads of new plays from playwrights in the Los Angeles community. The Vagrancy is also home to a writers group that culminates in an annual new play festival Blossoming, and a thriving acting company who participate in monthly acting workouts lead by the Artistic Staff and guest artists.

The Vagrancy creates visceral work that seeks to touch the human spirit. We embrace fear, vulnerability, and embarrassment – inviting the audience to experience a communion. We hope to spark a dialogue of questions and compassion, exposing a shared universal truth. We forge new, lesser-known, and classical works with that ineffable something. Duende.

Responsibilities of the position:

·         Maintain financial records and enforce the company's compliance with its bylaws and legal requirements, including filing taxes.

·         Assist with coordinating fundraising efforts and tracking revenue streams generated from productions and fundraising efforts.

·         Maintain organizational operating budget, as well as budgets for each production.

·         Work with the Artistic Leadership to re-structure the Board of Directors and implement a board development strategy.

·         Develop and oversee internal organization, process, and structure for the company in concert with other staff and leadership.

·         Create and oversee the implementation of a marketing strategy for the company as a whole and on individual productions.

·         Oversee volunteers, independent contractors and staff as needed to accomplish the responsibilities iterated above.

·         Strengthen and enhance the organization’s administrative departments in support of the Theatre’s expanded artistic goals and developing the resources to do so.


·         One to three years of work experience in the administration of theatre, preferably in a management or accounting role.

·         Experience producing theater in either an academic or equity-waiver setting.

·         The drive and willingness to help build from the ground up.

·         The desire and ability to partner with the theatre’s Artistic Director and Board and to support and communicate the organization’s mission and goals.

·         Strong skills in budgeting, creating long-term budgets and goals, and financial management.

·         Demonstrate experience and capacity to lead, manage, motivate, inspire, train and collaborate with company members, artists, Board members and volunteers.

·         Have the ability to successfully develop and implement long-term strategic and annual tactical plans.

·         Exhibit stamina and a strong work ethic, as well as the flexibility to deal with unpredictable pressures and a variable flow of work activity.
